EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Queen Mary (1867-1953), the consort of King George V, and the Dowager Queen Alexandra (1844-1925), the widow of King Edward VII, are seen together at a public function in the winter of 1915. The two queens, both dressed in elegant fur coats and hats, hold umbrellas as they make their way through a crowd, shielding themselves from the rain. Queen Mary, the younger woman on the left, was a German princess by birth but had become a naturalized British subject upon her marriage to the future King George V in 1893. She was known for her beauty, grace, and fashion sense, and would go on to become a beloved and dedicated monarch in her own right. The Dowager Queen Alexandra, on the right, was the widow of King Edward VII, who had reigned from 1901 until his death in 1910. She continued to play an important role in the royal family and was deeply respected for her kindness, generosity, and devotion to her late husband and to the British people. Despite their different roles and generations, the two queens are seen here in a warm and supportive relationship, a testament to the enduring strength and unity of the British monarchy. The photograph captures a moment of history, as well as the enduring bond between two remarkable women who played significant roles in the lives of their country and their royal family.
