EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, Rear-Admiral Henry Havelock "Harry" Rawson (1843-1910) of the Royal Navy stands proudly in his full uniform, exuding confidence and authority. Taken in 1897, the image captures Rawson at the height of his naval career, following his pivotal role in the shortest war in history between Great Britain and Zanzibar just a year prior. Born on December 7, 1843, Rawson joined the Royal Navy in 1855 and rose through the ranks with distinction. In August 1896, he was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief of the East Africa Station, putting him in charge of the British warships that took part in the brief conflict with Zanzibar. The catalyst for the war was the refusal of the Sultan of Zanzibar, Hamad bin Thuwaini, to cede power to his younger brother, Khalid bin Barghash, who was favored by the British. On August 27, 1896, Rawson ordered the bombardment of Zanzibar's Old Fort and the Beit el Ajaib palace, which marked the beginning of the hostilities. The fighting lasted for a mere 40 minutes, resulting in the deaths of around 800 Zanzibari defenders and civilians. The British suffered only three casualties. With the Sultan's forces defeated, Khalid bin Barghash was installed as the new ruler of Zanzibar, bringing an end to the conflict. The photograph, taken in the aftermath of the war, showcases Rear-Admiral Rawson's triumphant demeanor, reflecting his successful leadership during this significant moment in British colonial history. The image is a testament to his military prowess and the power of the Royal Navy during the late 19th century.
