EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, taken at the Royal Aeronautical Society's 80th anniversary dinner at Guildhall, London, on 11 January 1946, two of the most influential figures in the field of aviation, Lord Brabazon of Tara and Marshal of the RAF, Lord Tedder, are seen engrossed in conversation. The setting for this momentous occasion is the grand and ornate surroundings of Guildhall, a 15th century building that has served as a symbol of London's history and resilience. Lord Brabazon of Tara, whose full name was John Douglas Edward Henry Brabazon, 14th Earl of Meath and 2nd Marquess of Cashel, was a renowned Irish peer and aviation pioneer. He had a long-standing interest in aviation and was instrumental in the development of the De Havilland Comet, the world's first jet airliner. Lord Brabazon's vision for the future of air travel was evident in his advocacy for larger, faster, and more comfortable aircraft. Marshal of the RAF, Lord Tedder, whose full name was Bernard Law Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, was a British military leader and statesman. He played a crucial role in the Allied victory in the European theatre of World War II, particularly in the North African campaign. Lord Tedder's leadership skills extended beyond the battlefield, as he served as the Chief of the Air Staff from 1942 to 1946, during which time he oversaw the expansion of the Royal Air Force and the integration of new technologies into its operations. On the left of the photograph is Viscount Knollys, who served as the Chairman of BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation) at the time. The three men's presence at the dinner underscores the importance of aviation in post-war Britain and the role that these individuals played in shaping its future. The photograph captures a moment of camaraderie and shared vision, as Lord Brabazon and Lord Tedder discuss the possibilities of aviation and its potential to connect the world.
