EDITORS COMMENTS
This black-and-white photograph showcases the de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito FBVI, registration RS625, as it undergoes engine proving tests at the Bristol Aeroplane Company in the mid-20th century. The Mosquito, a versatile British aircraft, is depicted here in its Skua II configuration, previously flown by the Blackburn Aircraft Ltd. The Skua II, a naval dive-bomber and fighter, was an adaptation of the original Mosquito design, which was initially conceived as a fast unarmed photo-reconnaissance and fighter-bomber aircraft. The Skua II, with its distinctive cannon packs and bomb bay, was introduced to replace the obsolete Blackburn Skua in the Fleet Air Arm. L2885, the specific Mosquito featured in this image, was used by the Bristol Aeroplane Company for engine testing purposes. The company played a crucial role in the development and production of the Mosquito, manufacturing over 7,000 examples during World War II. The Mosquito's innovative design, which included a wooden airframe covered in plywood and doped fabric, allowed it to achieve exceptional speed and agility for its time. Its versatility extended beyond military applications, as it was later used for transport, passenger, and even racing roles. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of aviation, showcasing the de Havilland Mosquito in its Skua II configuration during engine proving tests at the Bristol Aeroplane Company.
