This stunning photograph showcases a Shamshir sword with its original scabbard, believed to have once belonged to Maharajah Ranjit Singh (1780-1839). The sword, dating back to 1845, is adorned with intricate gold engraving and watering on its blade, reflecting the exquisite craftsmanship of the Mamaluke style hilt. William Stephen Raikes Hodson (not to be confused with the Hodson's Horse company) is known to have been associated with this sword. Hodson, a British military officer, served in the 1857 and 1858 Indian Mutiny, and it is believed that he acquired the Shamshir sword during this time. The Shamshir sword, a traditional Persian and Indian sword, was widely used in the Indian subcontinent during the medieval and early modern periods.
