EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving is an exquisite illustration of three marine mammals from the North Atlantic Ocean: the Short-beaked Dolphin (Delphinus delphis), the North Atlantic Bottlenose Whale (Hyperoodon ampullatus), and the Short-beaked Common Dolphin (Delphinus delphis). The illustration is taken from Frederic Cuvier's "Dictionary of Natural Science: Mammals," published in Paris, France, in 1816. The illustration was produced by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre, who was a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became an artist at the Museum of Natural History. The engraving was expertly executed by Bocourt, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. The Short-beaked Dolphin, also known as the Common Dolphin, is easily recognizable by its short beak and sleek, streamlined body. The North Atlantic Bottlenose Whale, on the other hand, is a large, powerful creature with a distinctive bulbous head and long, flat teeth. The Short-beaked Common Dolphin is similar in appearance to the Short-beaked Dolphin but has a more rounded dorsal fin. This beautiful illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of these remarkable marine mammals, capturing their elegance and grace in intricate detail. The use of handcoloring adds an extra layer of depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a true work of art as well as a valuable scientific record.
