EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Sigmund Von Weech (1888-1982) is seen in the prime of his creative career. Born in Landsberg am Lech, Germany, Weech was a graphic designer, textile designer, writer, and a visionary artist whose work left an indelible mark on the design world. Weech's educational background was as diverse as his talents. He began his studies at the Royal Bavarian Technical University in Munich, where he pursued architecture. However, his passion for art led him to the Royal School of Applied Arts in Munich, where he studied graphic design under the tutelage of Julius Diez. Weech's design prowess was soon recognized on a grand scale when he was commissioned to create the State seal of the German Reich in 1921. His design, which features a bald eagle holding a swastika in its talons, has been a subject of controversy due to its association with the Nazi regime. However, it is essential to remember that Weech had no political affiliations and was merely an artist fulfilling a commission. Despite the political context of his most famous work, Weech's design has continued to be used in various capacities since 1950. His talent extended beyond graphic design, and he also made significant contributions to textile design and writing. This photograph captures the intellectual and artistic depth of a man who left an indelible mark on design history. Weech's legacy continues to inspire artists and designers around the world, and his work remains a testament to the power of creativity and innovation. This photograph is a rare glimpse into the life of a man whose contributions to the design world transcended political boundaries and continue to resonate with audiences today.
