EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: Sir Robert Harley of Brampton Bryan: A Prominent Statesman and Master of the Mint in 17th Century England Sir Robert Harley (1579-1656), depicted in this portrait, was a highly influential figure in 17th century English politics and finance. Born in Brampton Bryan, Herefordshire, Harley rose to prominence as a statesman and, notably, served as Master of the Mint from 1628 until 1642. Harley's political career began in earnest when he was elected Member of Parliament for Hereford in 1614. He quickly gained the favor of King James I, who appointed him to various positions of power, including the post of Solicitor General in 1617 and Attorney General in 1621. Harley's abilities as a skilled politician and diplomat were further demonstrated during his tenure as Speaker of the House of Commons from 1621 to 1622. In 1628, Harley was appointed Master of the Mint, a role that placed him at the heart of England's monetary system. During his time in this position, he oversaw the production of coins and implemented measures to improve the quality and consistency of the currency. Harley's success in this role earned him the nickname "The Father of the English Coinage." Despite his political achievements, Harley's career was not without controversy. He was implicated in the Star Chamber scandal of 1628, which involved allegations of bribery and corruption. However, Harley managed to weather the storm and continued to serve the crown, even during the tumultuous period of the English Civil War. This striking portrait captures the essence of Sir Robert Harley, a man of great intelligence, ambition, and determination, who left an indelible mark on English history as a statesman and master of the Mint.
