EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the historic Steam-driven Fire Engine (S.F.B.) No. 1 of the Southgate District Council Fire Service, proudly stationed in North London during the late 1890s. The date on the vehicle reads 1894, making it an essential piece of Victorian-era firefighting history. The crew, dressed in their full uniforms, poses confidently around the appliance. Among them, we find D. Gibbons, the driver, standing tall on the appliance. Third from the right is G. Walton, a dedicated firefighter. The officer on the right, with a stern expression, is Jack Horn. Tragically, Horn would lose his life in a munitions explosion in 1918, making this photograph an even more poignant reminder of the risks these brave men faced. The steam-powered engine, with its intricate machinery and large ladder, was a testament to the ingenuity and determination of the fire service during this era. Eventually, this remarkable piece of history found its way to the Science Museum in South Kensington, where it continues to inspire and educate generations about the evolution of firefighting technology. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the past, showcasing the courage and dedication of the firefighters who served their communities during the Victorian and Edwardian eras.
