EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Sunda Flying Lemur, Galeopterus variegatus, from Frederic Cuvier's Dictionary of Natural Science: Mammals, published in Paris, France, in 1816. The illustration was created by Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, and later became the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The engraving was executed by Carnonkel, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. The Sunda Flying Lemur, also known as the Sunda Colugo, is native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia. Contrary to its name, this lemur is not actually a true flying animal, but rather possesses a membrane that allows it to glide between trees. Its fur is a mix of gray, brown, and white, with a distinctive white patch on its chest. This exquisite engraving showcases the intricate details of the Sunda Flying Lemur's anatomy, from its large eyes and pointed snout to its long, bushy tail. The use of stipple engraving, a technique that involves dotting the surface of a copper plate with a sharp point to create tonal variations, adds depth and texture to the image. The Sunda Flying Lemur was an intriguing subject for naturalists of the time, and this engraving is a testament to the fascination and curiosity that these creatures inspired. Today, they remain an important part of the biodiversity of Southeast Asia, and efforts are being made to protect their habitats and ensure their survival.
