In this historic photograph, taken in 1925, French naval troops are seen providing cover for disembarking Spanish forces in the bay of Alhucemas, Morocco. The event marked a significant moment during the Rif War, a conflict between Spanish and Rif rebel forces over the control of the Rif Mountains and the Spanish protectorate in Morocco. The Spanish forces, who had been under siege in the nearby city of Melilla, were attempting to reinforce their positions and reclaim lost territory. However, they faced heavy resistance from Rif rebel forces, who were well-known for their guerrilla tactics and marksmanship. The French naval presence was crucial in enabling the Spanish forces to safely disembark and make their way to the shore. The French ships provided cover from Rif rebel fire, allowing the Spanish troops to make their way ashore without suffering heavy losses.
