A crowd of Hungarians watch books and pamphlets from a ransacked Russian bookshop being

A crowd of Hungarians watch books and pamphlets from a ransacked Russian bookshop being burnt in a Budapest street. By the end of October 1956 the fighting between the pro soviet communists and hastily organised militas had almost stopped. The new government formally disbanded the State Security Police and pledged to re-establish free elections. They also announced their willingness to negotiate with the USSR the withdrawal of Soviet forces from Hungary and the countrys withdrawal from the Warsaw pact. On November 4th a large Soviet force invaded Hungary. In the retaking of the country 700 Russian soldiers and over 2500 Hungarians were killed in the fighting. The Hungarian revolt was finally supressed on November 10th 1956

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this powerful photo print, we witness a crowd of Hungarians gathered in a Budapest street, their eyes fixed on the burning books and pamphlets from a ransacked Russian bookshop. It is late October 1956, and the intense fighting between pro-Soviet communists and hastily organized militias has nearly subsided. The newly formed government takes bold steps towards freedom by disbanding the State Security Police and promising free elections. They even express their willingness to negotiate with the USSR for the withdrawal of Soviet forces from Hungary and its departure from the Warsaw Pact. However, hope quickly turns into despair as on November 4th, an imposing Soviet force invades Hungary. This brutal intervention leads to a fierce retaking of the country, resulting in tragic losses: approximately 700 Russian soldiers perish alongside over 2500 brave Hungarians who fought for their independence. The Hungarian revolt that had ignited with such fervor finally succumbs to suppression on November 10th, marking an end to this valiant struggle against oppression. This photograph encapsulates both defiance and sorrow—a poignant reminder of how dreams for freedom can be shattered amidst geopolitical conflicts. As we reflect upon this image captured during one of history's most turbulent periods—the Cold War—we are reminded of humanity's unwavering spirit in pursuit of liberty despite overwhelming odds.
