Picture shows the first flying boat on the Thames for 21 years-passing under Tower Bridge

Picture shows the first flying boat on the Thames for 21 years-passing under Tower Bridge. The visit of the BOAC short solent flying-boat to London is part of the commemoration this year of the 30th anniversary of British Air Transport.
The Short Solent is a passenger flying boat that was produced by Short Brothers in the late 1940s.
The first Solent flew in 1946. New Solents were used by BOAC and TEAL, production ending in 1949. The aircraft could be fitted for 24 passengers with day and night accommodation or 36 day passengers. The cabins (four on the lower deck and two on the upper) could be used to sleep four or seat six. The upper deck included a lounge/dining area next to kitchen; the lower deck had two dressing rooms, toilets and three freight compartments. The Solent 2 introduced by BOAC could carry 34 passengers and 7 crew. Between 1948 and 1950, BOAC operated their Solents on the three-times weekly scheduled service from Southampton to Johannesburg taking a route down the Nile and across East Africa. The journey took four days, including overnight stops

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment on the Thames as the first flying boat in 21 years gracefully passes under Tower Bridge. The visit of the BOAC Short Solent flying-boat to London marks a significant milestone - the 30th anniversary of British Air Transport. The Short Solent, a passenger flying boat manufactured by Short Brothers in the late 1940s, made its debut flight in 1946. This particular aircraft could accommodate up to 24 passengers with day and night accommodation or 36 day passengers. Its luxurious cabins, four on the lower deck and two on the upper, provided comfort for travelers who could sleep or relax during their journey. BOAC and TEAL utilized these new Solents until production ceased in 1949. BOAC's version, known as Solent 2, had an increased capacity of carrying up to 34 passengers along with seven crew members. From 1948 to1950, BOAC operated scheduled services from Southampton to Johannesburg via a scenic route down the Nile and across East Africa that took four days including overnight stops. Taken around May10th, 1950 by Malindine from Memory Lane Prints collection; this picture not only showcases an iconic moment but also serves as a reminder of aviation history and technological advancements that have shaped air travel over time.
