They didn t have quite the organisation, perhaps, of the Munich Olympics. But the ecclesiastical games yesterday did have a spirit of their own. There were nuns, monks, rabbis, and vicars gathered in Chiswick to display their prowess for Spike Milligan, whose new BBC TV comedy series " A Milligan for all seasons" starts next week. There were hurdle races for the nuns (at least two of whom were fellers), pole vaults for priests... and an amazing- confessional relay, with each runner stopping to confess every 100 yards. Producer Roger Race, slightly bemused, said: " Spike told us to order a couple of dozen actors in clerical garb and this is the result." Spike himself turned out for the hurdles, dressed as a Roma n Catholic priest. Hoping to achieve immortality, presumably, as the Father of the Games. 4th September 1972

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Nuns Olympics: A Divine Display of Ecclesiastical Prowess". In this print captured by Ron Burton, we are transported back to the spirited and unconventional "Nuns Olympics" held in Chiswick on September 4th, 1972. The event was organized for Spike Milligan's new BBC TV comedy series, "A Milligan for all seasons" which promised to bring laughter and merriment to viewers' screens. The photograph showcases a diverse group of religious figures from various faiths, including nuns, monks, rabbis, and vicars. With their robes flowing behind them as they engage in friendly competition, these holy athletes demonstrate their athletic prowess with a unique twist. From hurdle races that featured both male and female nuns (or at least two individuals who appeared as such) to priests engaging in pole vaulting with grace and agility - every event showcased the participants' dedication and commitment towards achieving glory in their respective disciplines. One particularly remarkable spectacle was the confessional relay race. In this extraordinary event, each runner would pause every 100 yards to confess their sins before continuing the race. This added an element of humor while highlighting the importance of repentance within religious practices. Producer Roger Race expressed his bemusement at the unexpected turnout of actors dressed in clerical garb but acknowledged that it perfectly embodied Spike Milligan's vision for the games. Amongst all participants stood Spike himself – dressed as a Roman Catholic priest – taking part in hurdles with great enthusiasm. Perhaps seeking immortality as the Father of these Games? This delightful snapshot immortalizes an extraordinary moment when religion met athleticism with joyous abandon during The Nuns Olympics.
