The Nuns Olympics. The nuns high jump, an attempt by David Cannon

The Nuns Olympics. The nuns high jump, an attempt by David Cannon.
They didn t have quite the organisation, perhaps, of the Munich Olympics. But the ecclesiastical games yesterday did have a spirit of their own. There were nuns, monks, rabbis, and vicars gathered in Chiswick to display their prowess for Spike Milligan, whose new BBC TV comedy series " A Milligan for all seasons" starts next week. There were hurdle races for the nuns (at least two of whom were fellers), pole vaults for priests... and an amazing- confessional relay, with each runner stopping to confess every 100 yards. Producer Roger Race, slightly bemused, said: " Spike told us to order a couple of dozen actors in clerical garb and this is the result." Spike himself turned out for the hurdles, dressed as a Roma n Catholic priest. Hoping to achieve immortality, presumably, as the Father of the Games. 4th September 1972

The Nuns Olympics - A Spirited Display of Ecclesiastical Prowess

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, captured by David Cannon in 1972, we are transported back to a unique event that brought together nuns, monks, rabbis, and vicars for a day of sporting competition. The occasion was organized as a tribute to the legendary comedian Spike Milligan and his upcoming TV comedy series "A Milligan for all seasons". Despite lacking the grandeur and organization of the Munich Olympics, these ecclesiastical games held their own charm. The nuns took on high jump challenges with determination while priests showcased their agility through pole vaulting. However, it was the confessional relay that truly amazed spectators - each runner pausing every 100 yards to confess their sins. Producer Roger Race admitted being slightly bemused by the outcome when Spike instructed them to gather actors dressed in clerical garb for the event. Nevertheless, everyone embraced the spirit of fun and camaraderie. The photograph also captures Spike himself participating in hurdles dressed as a Roman Catholic priest. With this playful gesture, he aimed to immortalize himself as the Father of the Games. This nostalgic image from Memory Lane Prints reminds us not only of an entertaining moment but also highlights how sports can bring people from different religious backgrounds together in celebration and laughter.
