EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from 1956, we witness a unique initiative taken by a London business firm to ensure the smooth transition of their factory to Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire. Understanding the importance of family support for their employees, the firm organized coach trips for their workers' wives to visit the proposed new location. The purpose behind this thoughtful gesture was to alleviate any concerns or fears that these women might have had about uprooting their lives and moving away from London. Accompanied by Mr G. Brooke-Taylor, PRO for Hemel Hempstead Development Corporation, some of these wives can be seen exploring the newly built houses at Hemel Hempstead in awe and curiosity. This excursion not only provided them with an opportunity to familiarize themselves with potential future homes but also allowed them to envision a promising life in this emerging town. The photograph captures an era when companies went above and beyond mere employment contracts; they prioritized employee well-being and recognized the significance of familial support systems. It serves as a reminder of how businesses once valued not only productivity but also personal happiness and contentment. Taken by Ted Heanley, this snapshot encapsulates both architectural beauty and social history. It transports us back to a time when community development projects like Hemel Hempstead were reshaping landscapes while simultaneously fostering strong bonds between employers, employees, and families alike.
