The 102 foot Wiberforce monument overlooking Queens Gardens, Hull

The 102 foot Wiberforce monument overlooking Queens Gardens, Hull. The column is 90 feet and the statue on top is 12 feet tall, carved out of hard-wearing millstone grit. The statue was, in fact, an after-thought by the monument committee. It was sculpted by a Mr Feort in Dock Street and erected on the column in November 1835.
The Monument originally stood by Princes Dock for almost 100 years until Queens Dock closed in the 1930s. A new road layout was proposed for Queen Victoria Square area and the monument was making traffic flow very difficult.
In 1935 over four months the Monument was moved to its present location. 24th July 1958

EDITORS COMMENTS
The 102-foot Wiberforce monument stands tall and proud, overlooking the serene Queens Gardens in Hull. This magnificent structure consists of a 90-foot column made of durable millstone grit, with a striking 12-foot statue perched on top. Interestingly, the statue was not initially planned but was added later by the monument committee. Originally situated near Princes Dock for nearly a century, the monument faced relocation due to the closure of Queens Dock in the 1930s. The bustling traffic flow around Queen Victoria Square necessitated a new road layout, making it challenging for this historic landmark to remain in its original location. In an impressive feat that took over four months, the Monument was carefully moved to its current spot in 1935. Since then, it has become an iconic symbol of Hull's rich history and cultural heritage. Captured in this print from Memory Lane Prints is a glimpse into July 24th, 1958 - a hot summer day where clouds gently grace the Yorkshire sky. The silhouette of this remarkable sculpture against lush green gardens creates an enchanting cityscape scene. This image encapsulates both artistry and nostalgia as it transports us back to mid-20th century England. It serves as a reminder of our enduring connection to historical landmarks like Wiberforce monument and their significance within our communities.
