Three ATS (The Auxiliary Territorial Service) ladies take a look into the future, when the war will end and they will have coupons and be able to buy civilian underwear.
The Auxiliary Territorial Service was the womens branch of the British Army during the Second World War. It was formed on 9 September 1938, initially as a womens voluntary service, and existed until 1 February 1949, when it was merged into the Womens Royal Army Corps.
Rationing in World War Two meant purchasers had to present ration books, so that the coupons could be cancelled in exchange for limited items bought.

The Shape of Things to Come - A Glimpse into the Future

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print from Memory Lane Prints, we are transported back to a time of anticipation and excitement amidst the chaos of World War Two. The location remains unknown, but what is clear is that three courageous women from the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) are peering into a shop window, gazing at an array of civilian underwear. Taken circa 1st October 1944, this snapshot captures a moment when these ATS ladies dared to dream beyond their wartime duties. Rationing had gripped the nation tightly during those years, forcing individuals to present ration books in exchange for limited items. However, as they stood there envisioning a future where coupons would be obsolete and garments abundant, hope radiated through their expressions. The ATS was formed in 1938 as a voluntary service for women and played an integral role within the British Army throughout the war. Their dedication and resilience were unwavering. Yet even amidst their selfless service, they longed for simple pleasures like purchasing civilian clothing without restrictions. This image serves as a powerful reminder of both the sacrifices made during wartime and the human desire for normalcy. It encapsulates not only fashion aspirations but also represents countless dreams deferred by conflict. As we gaze upon this poignant photograph today, let us honor these brave women who looked past uncertainty towards brighter days ahead—a testament to resilience in times of adversity.
