A goal post is seen on Sao Conrado beach in Rio de Janeiro
A goal post is seen on Botafogo beach, with Sugar Loaf mountain in the background, in Rio de Janeiro, May 1, 2014. The 2014 World Cup will be held in Brazil from June 12 through July 13. In Brazil, soccer goalposts can be found almost anywhere, from slums to sandy beaches. The FIFA Laws of the Game specify the length between the goal posts is 8 yards (7.32m); the lower edge of the crossbar should be 8 ft. (2.44m) from the ground; and the posts themselves should be 5 inches (12cm) or smaller. But all sorts of other goals are used by amateur players, who can employ anything from scraps of wood nailed together, to rusting pieces of metal to play a game of soccer. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of soccer culture in Brazil, where goalposts can be found in the most unexpected places. Against the stunning backdrop of Sugar Loaf mountain, a solitary goal post stands tall on Botafogo beach in Rio de Janeiro. As preparations for the 2014 World Cup intensify, this image serves as a reminder of the nation's deep-rooted love for the beautiful game. According to FIFA Laws of the Game, a regulation goal post should measure 8 yards between its posts and have a crossbar positioned 8 ft. from the ground. However, amateur players across Brazil often resort to using makeshift goals constructed from various materials like wood or rusty metal scraps. These improvised structures symbolize not only their resourcefulness but also their unwavering passion for soccer. As Brazil eagerly awaits hosting one of sports' grandest events, scenes like these reflect how deeply ingrained soccer is within Brazilian society. From sandy beaches to impoverished slums, these humble yet resilient goalposts serve as symbols of unity and shared dreams. Photographer Sergio Moraes masterfully captures this unique aspect of Brazilian culture through his lens. The juxtaposition between nature's beauty and man-made structures creates an intriguing visual narrative that showcases both Brazil's natural wonders and its people's unyielding devotion to soccer. In this single frame frozen in time, we witness not just a simple goalpost but an emblematic representation of Brazil's rich sporting heritage – a testament to their readiness to welcome football enthusiasts from around the world during those exhilarating summer weeks in 2014.
