The granite pillars in the farm yard came from the old Truro Market House. Glass lantern slide from a lecture, entitled Some Historic Cornish Beauty Spots, given by Cornishman and amateur photographer, Major Arthur William Gill, in around 1925. He was well known in Cornwall and elsewhere during the 1920s and 1930s for his presentations of stills and cine film to many groups including The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society and the London Cornish Society. The quarter plate slides which he took prolifically with his ordinary camera are, in many cases, colour. These were painted by his own hand to great effect

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the transformation of a chapel into a barn in Golden, Probus, Cornwall around 1925. The image captures the unique blend of history and agriculture as the granite pillars from the old Truro Market House stand proudly in the farmyard. The photograph is part of a glass lantern slide collection that belonged to Major Arthur William Gill, an esteemed Cornishman and amateur photographer. Major Gill was renowned for his presentations on stills and cine films during the 1920s and 1930s. His lectures, such as "Some Historic Cornish Beauty Spots" were highly regarded by various groups including The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society, and even the London Cornish Society. What makes these quarter plate slides truly exceptional is that many of them are hand-painted by Major Gill himself. With great skill and artistry, he brought vibrant colors to his photographs using ordinary cameras - a testament to his passion for capturing Cornwall's beauty. This particular image offers a glimpse into both architectural heritage and rural life in early 20th century Cornwall. It serves as a reminder of how historical structures can be repurposed while preserving their charm within evolving landscapes like manor farms
