EDITORS COMMENTS
Captured in the early 1900s, this print showcases a mesmerizing scene of three majestic schooners gracefully beached in St Ives' harbour during low tide. The view from the wharf offers a glimpse towards the back of Smeatons Pier, where these magnificent vessels rest against the backdrop of Cornwall's picturesque coastline. Amongst them stands the Susan Elizabeth, an iconic St Ives schooner, positioned closest to the camera. Little did anyone know that her fate would soon change dramatically. Tragically, on October 17th, 1907, she met her untimely demise as she succumbed to treacherous waters and was wrecked at Porthminster Beach. This remarkable photograph captures not only a moment frozen in time but also encapsulates the rich maritime history that has shaped this coastal town for centuries. It serves as a testament to the bravery and skill of those who navigated these vessels through unpredictable seas. The image evokes nostalgia for an era when sailing ships were essential for trade and transportation along Cornwall's rugged shores. It invites us to imagine bustling harbours filled with activity; rowing boats navigating between larger vessels while sailors work diligently on deck. Preserved by Royal Cornwall Museum and captured by an unknown photographer, this historic print allows us to appreciate both the beauty of Cornish sailing heritage and reflect upon its poignant stories.
