EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Royal Cornwall Museum takes us back in time to the year 1932, capturing a slice of everyday life in Newquay, Cornwall. The focal point of the image is a magnificent Great Western Railway horse-drawn parcel van parked outside the charming terraced house known as Fern Dale. The van proudly displays the name "M. A. Hoyte, Newquay" possibly indicating that Mrs. M. A. Hoyte was involved in running this local carrier service. Adorned on its side is a poster enticing passersby with return tickets to either Falmouth for Falmouth Week or Plymouth for Plymouth Week, which had just concluded on July 16th. Standing beside the majestic horse pulling the van is Archie Morris, a carter who seems at ease with his trusted companion and work partner. Sitting next to him on the traces are his two daughters, Peggy and Joan, undoubtedly enjoying their unique vantage point. As we peer into this snapshot of history, we catch a glimpse of Archie's wife partially visible behind the horse while an unidentified lady stands gracefully amidst her garden in the background - perhaps a visitor captivated by this picturesque scene unfolding before her eyes. Although it remains unknown who precisely captured this moment frozen in time through their lens, we owe them our gratitude for preserving such an evocative piece of Cornish heritage.
