Mangrove trees
Mangrove trees. Young red mangrove trees (Rhizophora mangle) growing amongst volcanic rocks beside a swamp. The mangrove inhabits brackish water in tropical and sub-tropical areas. The aerial roots allow the tree to absorb carbon dioxide from the air and help to stabilise it in the soft mud. They trap soil and silt, aiding the formation of new land in coastal areas. The roots also provide support for seedlings, which are unique in that they germinate while still attached to the parent plant. Only after weeks of growth do the seedlings drop off. Photographed at Puna, Hawaii, USA

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the enchanting beauty of young red mangrove trees thriving amidst volcanic rocks in a swampy habitat. Found in tropical and sub-tropical regions, these magnificent trees have adapted to survive in brackish water. What makes them truly remarkable are their aerial roots that serve multiple purposes. Not only do they enable the tree to absorb carbon dioxide from the air, but they also provide essential stability in the soft mud. These intricate root systems play a crucial role in coastal areas by trapping soil and silt, aiding in the formation of new land. Additionally, they offer vital support for seedlings which possess a unique characteristic - germinating while still attached to their parent plant. It is only after weeks of growth that these resilient seedlings finally detach themselves. Captured at Puna, Hawaii, USA, this photograph offers a glimpse into an extraordinary ecosystem where nature's wonders unfold before our eyes. The image portrays not just the resilience and adaptability of mangroves but also highlights their significant contribution to environmental balance. With its rich hues and contrasting textures against the backdrop of volcanic rocks, this photograph encapsulates both scientific fascination and aesthetic allure. It serves as a reminder of how interconnected our natural world is and encourages us to appreciate and protect these invaluable ecosystems found across our planet.
