Ammonite fossil, Hudsonoceras proetum
Ammonite fossil. Fossilised shell of the ammonite Hudsonoceras proetum. This is a Goniatite fossil (order: Goniatitida), one of the primitive ammonoids which are used as zone fossils in Devonian and Carboniferous strata (dating from 395-345 & 345-280 million years ago respectively). Ammonites were marine molluscs with a coiled shell and distinct head and mouth region surrounded by tentacles. The last ammonites became extinct in the Upper Cretaceous Period, about 65 million years ago. This specimen of Hudsonoceras proetum is 1.6 centimetres across, and was found in Ireland
