Coloured SEM of surface of proboscis of flesh fly
Proboscis of flesh fly. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of the sucking surface of the proboscis of a grey flesh fly, Sarcophaga carnaria. The proboscis is an elongated feeding organ used to sponge up liquid or soluble food, (dead or decaying flesh in the case of the flesh fly). The sucking surface consists of two labella, covered with a network of branching grooves (pseudo- tracheae). These grooves lock together in the same way as a zip fastener, as seen here. It is this sponge organ which conveys liquid food to the mouth. Solid foods are dissolved in a drop of saliva & sucked up in the same way. Magnification: x300 at 5x7cm size. x950 at 10x8ins

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a flesh fly's proboscis. The coloured scanning electron micrograph reveals the sucking surface of this elongated feeding organ, which is primarily used to absorb liquid or soluble food. In the case of the grey flesh fly, Sarcophaga carnaria, it serves as a tool for sponging up dead or decaying flesh. The proboscis features two labella that are covered in a network of branching grooves known as pseudo-tracheae. These grooves interlock like a zip fastener, allowing the fly to effectively extract nutrients from its chosen food source. This mesmerizing sponge-like structure acts as a conduit, conveying liquid sustenance to the mouth. Not only does this remarkable organ facilitate fluid intake, but it also enables consumption of solid foods by dissolving them with saliva and subsequently suctioning them up in a similar manner. The level of detail captured in this image is truly astonishing. With magnification at x300 for 5x7cm prints and an impressive x950 for 10x8ins prints, this photograph offers viewers an opportunity to appreciate nature's incredible designs on both small and large scales. It serves as a testament to the wonders found within our natural world and highlights just how diverse and fascinating insect anatomy can be.
