Mammoth bone musical instruments

Prehistoric carved mammoth bone musical instruments. Dating from around 20, 000 years ago, during the Stone Age, these carvings are believed to have been used by early Man to produce sound. The top picture shows a mammoth (Mammuthus sp.) shoulder blade and a hammer from deer bone, which may have been used as a drum. The next picture shows a mammoth hip bone, which has varying tone when struck along its length. The two bottom pictures show a castanet and rattler made from a mammoth jaw bone. Mammoths are an elephant-like mammal which inhabited northern regions of the world and became extinct only a few thousand years ago
