Muonionalusta meteorite, micrograph
Dark field micrograph of the surfcace of the iron fine octahedrite type meteorite Muonionalusta, found in Sweden. The Widmanstatten pattern of lines on the newly-cut surface are produced by the edges of crystals in the meteorite. The pattern was formed about 1 billion years ago when the iron mass solidified in one of several minor planets between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. These planets have since been disrupted to form the asteroid belt. The fragments resulting from collisions between asteroids are deflected into orbits that cross the path of the Earth. Analysis of meteorites can provide information on the composition of the early solar system. Object size of this close-up: approx. 2, 5 mm

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of the Muonionalusta meteorite, a rare iron fine octahedrite type found in Sweden. The dark field micrograph captures the newly-cut surface, revealing a mesmerizing Widmanstatten pattern of lines. These patterns were formed over 1 billion years ago when this celestial object solidified within one of several minor planets located between Mars and Jupiter. The remnants of these disrupted planets eventually coalesced to form what we now know as the asteroid belt. As asteroids collide with each other, fragments are deflected into orbits that intersect with Earth's path. This particular meteorite is one such fragment that made its way to our planet. Studying meteorites like Muonionalusta provides valuable insights into the composition and history of our early solar system. By analyzing their mineralogy and crystalline structures, scientists can unravel mysteries about how our universe evolved. In this close-up shot, measuring approximately 2.5 mm in size, Alfred Pasieka expertly captures the cosmic wonder contained within this extraterrestrial rock. The image serves as a reminder of both the vastness and intricacy of space while highlighting humanity's ongoing quest for knowledge about our place in the cosmos.
