Canvas Prints from Science Photo Library
Robot carrying out simulated brain surgery
Robot-aided surgery. Intelligent robot (upper frame) carrying out simulated brain surgery on a model head. This minimally invasive surgery (MIS) system enables delicate neurosurgery to be carried out with a precision of a thousandth of a millimetre. The robots movements are controlled by a surgeon using a joystick while viewing the operation site on an enlarged screen. The robot can manipulate various instruments inserted into a small incision in the head. MIS is safer than conventional surgery, in addition to reducing patient pain and recovery times. The robot was developed by a team from the Fraunhofer Institute, Germany, headed by Angela Hiller

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the incredible advancements in medical technology, specifically in the field of neurosurgery. In this image, we witness a highly intelligent robot carrying out simulated brain surgery on a model head. Developed by a team from the prestigious Fraunhofer Institute in Germany, led by Angela Hiller, this robot-aided surgery system revolutionizes traditional surgical procedures. Utilizing minimally invasive surgery (MIS) techniques, this groundbreaking system enables surgeons to perform delicate neurosurgical operations with unparalleled precision – down to a thousandth of a millimeter. The surgeon controls the robot's movements through a joystick while observing the operation site on an enlarged screen. This innovative approach allows for enhanced dexterity and accuracy during complex surgeries. By manipulating various instruments inserted through small incisions in the head, this advanced robotic system ensures safer procedures compared to conventional methods. Not only does it minimize patient pain and discomfort but also significantly reduces recovery times. The implications of such technological advancements are profound for healthcare professionals and patients alike. Remote surgeries become feasible as robots like these can be controlled by skilled surgeons from distant locations, expanding access to specialized care around the world. In summary, this awe-inspiring print captures an extraordinary moment where science meets medicine at its finest. It symbolizes hope for improved patient outcomes and represents another remarkable achievement in our ongoing quest for medical excellence.
