EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the poignant moment of departure for the First Contingent of the Great Western Railway (GWR) Regimental Company of Railway Troops, Royal Engineers, at Paddington Station on June 18th, 1915. The image is dominated by the tall, proud figures of Scottish Highland soldiers, their tartan kilts and distinctive bonnets standing out against the grey backdrop of the station. At the head of the procession, a lone Highland piper plays a mournful tune, his bagpipes echoing through the vast expanse of the station. The piper's expression is solemn, his eyes fixed on the ground, as if in deep contemplation of the journey ahead and the sacrifices that lay before these brave men. The soldiers, many of whom were railway employees, were volunteering to serve their country in the First World War. The GWR Regimental Company of Railway Troops, Royal Engineers was formed to provide essential engineering support to the British military effort on the Western Front. The scene at Paddington Station that day was one of both pride and sadness. Pride in the courage and commitment of these men, who were leaving their homes and families to serve their country. And sadness, knowing that many would not return. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the men and women of the railway industry during the First World War. It is a testament to their patriotism, their courage, and their unwavering commitment to their country and their employers.
