Preparations for the Easter (Dublin) Rising of 1916
Mary Spring Rice and Molly Childers on the yacht Asgard bring guns from Germany to the Irish Volunteers, July 1914.
The box of ammunition is clearly marked Hamburg - the guns were sourced from Germany, Britains oppoment in WW1
Asgard was Erskine Childerss last, and most famous, yacht: in June 1914 he used it to smuggle a cargo of 900 elderly but serviceable Mauser Model 1871 rifles and 29, 000 black powder cartridges to the Irish Volunteers movement at the fishing village of Howth, County Dublin (later known as the " Howth gun-running" ). It was acquired by the Irish government as a sail training vessel in 1961, stored on dry land in the yard of Kilmainham Gaol in 1979, and finally became a static exhibit at The National Museum of Ireland in 2012. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in Irish history - the preparations for the Easter Rising of 1916. Mary Spring Rice and Molly Childers stand proudly on the yacht Asgard, their determined faces reflecting their commitment to the cause. In July 1914, this vessel embarked on a clandestine mission to bring guns from Germany to support the Irish Volunteers. The box of ammunition prominently displays its origin - Hamburg, symbolizing that these weapons were sourced from Germany, Britain's adversary in World War I. This act of defiance against British rule would later be known as the "Howth gun-running" where Erskine Childers used his beloved yacht Asgard to smuggle 900 rifles and thousands of cartridges to support Ireland's fight for independence. Asgard holds immense historical significance as it was not only Erskine Childers' last and most famous yacht but also became an emblematic symbol of resistance. Acquired by the Irish government in 1961 as a sail training vessel, it found itself stored on dry land at Kilmainham Gaol before becoming a static exhibit at The National Museum of Ireland in 2012. In this poignant image captured by TopFoto. co. uk, we witness two courageous women playing pivotal roles in shaping Ireland's destiny. Their actions serve as a testament to the unwavering spirit and determination displayed during one of Ireland's most defining moments - an event that would forever change its course towards freedom and self-determination.
