EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics, we catch a glimpse of the Great Britain men's luge team unwinding in a bathhouse in Sapporo, Japan. The relaxed atmosphere is palpable as Jonnie Woodall, Jeremy Palmer-Tomkinson (front left), Richard Liversedge, Rupert Deen, Stephen Marsh, and Michel de Carvalho (third from right) enjoy some downtime before their intense competition. Palmer-Tomkinson's family has a rich history at the Winter Olympics with his father James and brother Charles also being Olympians. Interestingly enough, his niece Tara would later gain fame as a socialite. De Carvalho, known by his stage name Michel Ray during his brief Hollywood film career, had even played the role of "Faraj" an Arab boy in the iconic movie Lawrence of Arabia. Adding to his intriguing background is his wife Charlene who happens to be Freddy Heineken's daughter – inheriting her family fortune in 2002. This remarkable image captured by Colorsport photographer Stewart Fraser allows us to witness not only these athletes' camaraderie but also provides glimpses into their fascinating personal stories beyond the world of sports. It serves as a testament to both their dedication on the Olympic stage and their diverse backgrounds that have shaped them into who they are today.
