Echidna. The Short Beaked Echidna, (sometimes known as spiny anteaters)

The Short Beaked Echidna, (sometimes known as spiny anteaters) belong to the family Tachyglossidae in the monotreme order of egg-laying mammals. The four extant species, together with the platypus, are the only surviving members of that order and are the only extant mammals that lay eggs.[2] Their diet consists of ants and termites, but they are not closely related to the true anteaters of the Americas. They live in Australia and New Guinea

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the unique beauty of the Short Beaked Echidna, a fascinating creature that belongs to the family Tachyglossidae in the monotreme order of egg-laying mammals. With its spiny exterior and distinctive beak, this echidna is a true marvel of nature. Native to Australia and New Guinea, these incredible animals have a diet consisting mainly of ants and termites. Despite their name, they are not closely related to true anteaters found in the Americas. Along with the platypus, they are one of the only surviving members of their order and are among the few mammals that lay eggs. In this image captured by photographer Greg Newington, we see a Short Beaked Echidna in its natural habitat in South Australia. The selective focus highlights every detail of its beak and bristled body part as it goes about its day foraging for food. This photograph serves as a reminder of the diverse wildlife that inhabits our world and showcases the beauty and wonder of these remarkable creatures. It is a testament to both the skill of the photographer and the awe-inspiring nature of Australia's wildlife.
