is a captivating engraving that transports us to the military camps of Bechuanaland, now known as Botswana. The image depicts a scene filled with horror and disarray. In the center of the composition, we see a soldier, his face contorted in shock and disbelief. A lizard creeps along the edge of his boot, unaware of the tragedy unfolding before it. The soldier's unintentional slap has resulted in the death of an innocent ant, crushed beneath his hand. Meanwhile, a fly hovers near his nose, seemingly undeterred by the chaos surrounding it. It is as if this tiny creature carries on with its own agenda amidst all this commotion. The bell tent itself stands witness to this unfortunate event - its open flaps revealing glimpses of military life within. In this momentary lapse of ease between friends, tragedy strikes unexpectedly. One cannot help but feel for our protagonist's friend who looks on with wide eyes at what has transpired. He seems bothered by both the loss suffered and perhaps even concerned about his comrade's state of mind. As our gaze shifts towards their surroundings - Bechuanaland's vast landscape stretches out beyond them - reminding us that tragedies can occur even in remote corners where one seeks solace and camaraderie. This engraving captures not only a specific incident but also serves as a reminder that sometimes fate can be cruelly unpredictable – forever altering friendships and leaving behind
