Although the Bengal Army mainly consisted of locally-recruited Indian soldiers, there were also Europeans on its strength. British officers commanded all native infantry, cavalry and engineer units. There were also three European infantry regiments and two regiments of European horse artillery. The Company recruited these units in Britain and maintained training camps at Newport on the Isle of White, Warley in Essex and Chatham in Kent. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the officers' shako and plume worn by a staff member of the East India Company's Recruit Training Depot at Warley, Essex in 1856. The image, captured by an anonymous British School artist from the 19th century, is now housed in the National Army Museum in London. During this time period, while the majority of soldiers serving in the Bengal Army were Indian recruits, there were also European individuals who held positions within its ranks. These Europeans served as commanding officers for native infantry, cavalry, and engineer units. In addition to these roles, there were three European infantry regiments and two regiments of European horse artillery that were recruited from Britain. To prepare those destined for service in India, training camps were established at Newport on the Isle of White, Warley in Essex, and Chatham in Kent. Furthermore, an educational institution called Addiscombe was set up specifically to provide comprehensive education for individuals embarking on their journey to serve under the East India Company. The photograph captures not only a piece of historical military attire but also represents a significant chapter in British colonial history. It serves as a reminder of how different cultures intertwined during this era and highlights the diverse makeup of forces serving under one banner.
