EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures the regal presence of Claude of Lorraine, the first Duke of Guise. Painted at the age of 30, this lithograph showcases his commanding stature and elegant attire. With a brown cape draped over a slashed jerkin, Claude exudes confidence and power. His white and blue hose and stockings add a touch of sophistication to his ensemble. A sword in a blue scabbard hangs by his side, symbolizing his military prowess and leadership abilities. The handcolored illustration brings out the intricate details of Claude's outfit, highlighting the craftsmanship involved in creating such historical costumes. This artwork is part of Georges Duplessis' "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries) series published in Paris in 1867. Duplessis was an esteemed curator at Bibliotheque nationale while Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard lent his artistic talent as an illustrator for this project. The lithograph signed by J. Jacquet showcases not only Claude's physical appearance but also serves as a testament to his significant role during that era. As one gazes upon this image, they are transported back in time to witness the grandeur and influence embodied by Claude of Lorraine - truly an iconic figure from history captured beautifully on paper.
