EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Women of Venice, 16th century" takes us back in time to the vibrant streets of Renaissance Venice. The image showcases a group of elegantly dressed women, each carrying bags filled with precious silkworm eggs. Their attire is a reflection of the fashion trends prevalent during that era - long dresses layered over underdresses, revealing open necklines and adorned with intricate lace collars. The handcolored illustration was masterfully created by Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard, an accomplished artist known for his attention to detail and historical accuracy. Lithographed by A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie, this artwork captures the essence of Venetian society in the 16th century. The image is part of Georges Duplessis' renowned book "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries), published in Paris in 1867. Lechevallier-Chevignard's talent as an artist shines through this piece as he brings these Venetian women to life with his brushstrokes. His expertise extended beyond painting; he also worked as an interior designer for public buildings and churches while teaching at the National School of Decorative Arts.
