EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured lithograph showcases the magnificent "View of the Square and the Grand Theatre, St Petersburg" in all its glory. Created by an anonymous French School artist during the 19th century, this print offers a glimpse into the architectural splendor of Russia's past. The image transports us to a winter wonderland, with snow-covered streets and a troika gliding through the square. The grandeur of St Petersburg is evident in every detail, from the majestic portico adorning the theatre entrance to the elegant carriages waiting outside. Horses stand proudly, their breath visible in the crisp air, adding life and movement to this frozen scene. It is fascinating to note that this theatre was eventually replaced by what is now known as Mariinsky (Kirov) Theatre in 1860. However, at the time when this litho was created, it stood tall as a symbol of cultural excellence since its opening in 1783. As we admire this artwork preserved within Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, France today, we are reminded of both history's beauty and its fragility. Despite being burnt down tragically in 1793 - an event not depicted here - this print immortalizes a moment frozen forever on paper. Let us appreciate not only its aesthetic appeal but also reflect upon how art can capture fleeting moments for generations to come.
