This stunning altarpiece, dating from the 1480s, depicts the Crucifixion of Christ, a central theme in the Passion of Christ narrative from the New Testament. The Passion tells the story of Christ's suffering, from his arrest to his Crucifixion, and often included earlier and later events such as the Entombment. This altarpiece, possibly from Germany or northern Europe, is a prime example of the intricate and detailed artistry of the late medieval period. The central figure is Christ, nailed to the cross and bleeding profusely. He looks down and gestures towards his mother, the Virgin Mary, who stands at the foot of the cross, her hands in prayer. To the left, St. John the Evangelist, identified by the book he holds, cradles the Virgin's other hand in a supportive gesture. To the right, the Virgin Mary Magdalene, with her distinctive flowing hair, reaches out to touch the wound in Christ's side.
