Amy Johnson, British aviator, about to set out for Cape Town, 1932. Johnson (1903-1941) saying goodbye to her husband, fellow pilot James Mollison, before starting off. She created a new record for a solo flight from London to Cape Town, completing the trip in 4 days, 6 hours and 54 minutes, beating her husbands record by 10 hours, 28 minutes. In 1930 Johnson became the first woman to fly solo from Britain to Australia in her DH60 Moth aeroplane Jason and in 1933 she flew non-stop across the Atlantic in a De Havilland biplane with Mollison. Johnson joined the Air Transport Auxilary as a pilot in World War II, during which she was lost after baling out over the Thames estuary. (Colorised black and white print)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in aviation history, featuring the renowned British aviator Amy Johnson preparing to embark on her groundbreaking solo flight from London to Cape Town in 1932. The image showcases Johnson bidding farewell to her husband and fellow pilot, James Mollison, before embarking on this daring adventure. Amy Johnson was an extraordinary pioneer who shattered gender barriers and achieved remarkable feats in the world of aviation. She not only became the first woman to fly solo from Britain to Australia in 1930 but also made headlines by completing a non-stop transatlantic flight with Mollison three years later. In this photograph, we witness Johnson's determination and infectious smile as she stands confidently beside her aircraft. Dressed impeccably for the occasion, she exudes both elegance and resilience. Her record-breaking journey would take her just over four days, six hours, and fifty-four minutes - surpassing even her husband's previous achievement by ten hours and twenty-eight minutes. Tragically, Amy Johnson's life was cut short during World War II when she went missing after bailing out over the Thames estuary while serving as a pilot for the Air Transport Auxiliary. This colorized black-and-white print beautifully brings this historic moment back to life, allowing us to appreciate Amy Johnson's indomitable spirit and enduring legacy as one of aviation's most celebrated figures.
