Bridal wedding sash, 1800s. Creator: Unknown

Bridal wedding sash, 1800s. Elaborate wedding sashes woven in Fez, Morocco, are distinctive for their multiple colours, designs, and uses. Folded lengthwise, they are wrapped around the waist so that the colours and designs coordinate with the attire worn during and after a wedding. Typically, the colours vary on each half whereas the designs are the same. Luxury textiles with elaborate patterns were woven on large looms called drawlooms that automatically repeated designs. The weaver operated the structure, inserting horizontal wefts, while the drawboy activated the programmed pattern. However, this wedding sash has ten programmed designs, which required considerable expertise

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning Bridal wedding sash from the 1800s, its creator unknown. Originating from Fez, Morocco, these elaborate wedding sashes are renowned for their vibrant colors, intricate designs, and versatile uses. When folded lengthwise, they gracefully encircle the waist while harmonizing with the bridal attire during and after the wedding ceremony. What sets these remarkable sashes apart is their unique color scheme - each half boasting different hues while maintaining identical patterns throughout. Crafted using luxurious textiles with elaborate motifs, skilled weavers employed large drawlooms to create these masterpieces. These drawlooms were equipped to automatically repeat designs as the weaver skillfully inserted horizontal wefts into place. However, this particular wedding sash stands out even further due to its exceptional complexity. With ten programmed designs intricately woven into it, crafting such a piece required immense expertise on behalf of the artisan involved. Preserved in silk and dyed on the loom itself using lampas technique (warps dyed on loom), this exquisite textile now finds its home at The Cleveland Museum of Art under Heritage Art/Heritage Images' care. A testament to Moroccan heritage artistry and craftsmanship that transcends time and borders alike; this photograph invites us to marvel at an extraordinary creation whose origins remain shrouded in mystery but whose beauty speaks volumes about human creativity and ingenuity.
