EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Charles d'Amboise, Seigneur de Chaumont, a prominent French soldier from the 16th century. The detailed engraving captures his commanding presence as he stands tall in his exquisite attire. Charles served as the Governor of Milan during the reign of Louis XII of France and played a crucial role in leading the French armies during the War of the League of Cambrai. Dressed in a magnificent cloak and an elegant cap, Charles exudes authority and power. His clothing reflects the fashion trends of the era with tights and hose adding to his regal appearance. As Marshal of France since 1504, he held great responsibility for protecting his country's interests on both land and sea. Tragically, Charles met his untimely demise due to illness while campaigning at Correggio. Despite this unfortunate end, his legacy lives on through this remarkable portrait that immortalizes him as one of France's esteemed military leaders. This print is part of "La France et les Francais à Travers les Siècles". Volume III - a comprehensive collection edited by F Roy and published between 1882-1884. It offers us a glimpse into history, allowing us to appreciate not only Charles d'Amboise's significant contributions but also provides insight into sixteenth-century fashion and warfare during this tumultuous period known as the Italian Wars.
