Guarding the Banks of the Suez Canal, (1919). Creator: Unknown

Guarding the Banks of the Suez Canal, (1919). Scene from the First World War, 1914-1919: Many bombastic threats were made by the Turks as to how they were going to cross the Suez Canal and invade Egypt. So effectively were the banks guarded, however, that the Turkish attacks were completely routed at every point assailed, and their scattered remnants disappeared across the desert whence they came. From " The History of the Great European War: its causes and effects", Vol. IV, by W. Stanley Macbean Knight. [Caxton Pulishing Company, Limited, London, 1919]

Guarding the Banks of the Suez Canal, (1919) - Defending Egypt's Gateway to Victory

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a crucial moment in history during the First World War. The scene depicts soldiers standing tall along the banks of the iconic Suez Canal, their determined expressions reflecting their unwavering commitment to protect Egypt from invasion. The Suez Canal served as a vital lifeline for trade and transportation between Europe and Asia, making it an attractive target for enemy forces. The Turks had bombastically threatened to breach its defenses and invade Egypt, but this image tells a different story. It showcases the resolute efforts of these brave men who successfully repelled every Turkish attack with remarkable effectiveness. Their unwavering dedication ensured that scattered remnants of defeated Turkish troops vanished into the vast desert from whence they came. This photograph stands as a testament to their triumph over adversity and highlights their pivotal role in safeguarding not only Egypt but also securing victory for the Allies during this tumultuous period. Preserved within "The History of the Great European War: its causes and effects" authored by W. Stanley Macbean Knight, this image serves as a powerful reminder of courage amidst conflict. Through monochrome tones that evoke nostalgia, it transports us back to North Africa in 1919 when these unsung heroes stood guard against formidable threats. As we gaze upon this historic snapshot today, let us honor those nameless soldiers whose bravery protected one of humanity's most significant waterways – ensuring peace prevailed over chaos on African soil during World War I.
