Second Annual Competition of the Edinburgh and Midlothian Rifle Association, 1862. Creator: Unknown

Second Annual Competition of the Edinburgh and Midlothian Rifle Association, [Scotland], 1862. The ranges this year were on a lower level, and consequently less exposed to the gusts of wind which on the former occasion proved so detrimental to the success of many competitors, while one of them - that for the competition at 600 yards - was sheltered by trees on each side, the marksmen firing, as it were, along a broad avenue...The entrances for visitors and competitors were from the road leading from Morningside to the Braid Hills, and a temporary wooden box, to serve the purpose of an office for the ticket collector, for keeping the scores, &c. was erected at the northern entrance. From a flagstaff hoisted at each gable of this erection fluttered & union jack, and a blue flag with the arms of the city of Edinburgh in one corner and the word "Welcome" traced across it in large white letters. The Royal standard was set up on the summit of Blackford Hill, and at various points there were danger-flags hoisted to warn off strangers'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the Second Annual Competition of the Edinburgh and Midlothian Rifle Association, held in Scotland in 1862. The ranges for this year's event were situated on a lower level, providing protection against the wind that had previously disrupted the success of many competitors during the previous competition. One of the competitions, held at 600 yards, was further shielded by trees on either side, allowing marksmen to fire along a tranquil avenue. Visitors and competitors entered the grounds from the Morningside road, where a temporary wooden office was erected for ticket collection and scorekeeping. At each entrance, a Union Jack and the city of Edinburgh's arms adorned flagstaffs, accompanied by a "Welcome" flag. The Royal Standard was hoisted atop Blackford Hill, and danger flags were placed at various points to warn off unauthorized individuals. The Edinburgh and Midlothian Rifle Association was a prominent shooting organization in Scotland during the mid-19th century. These competitions served as opportunities for marksmen to showcase their skills, foster camaraderie, and promote the sport of rifle shooting. The meticulously planned event, as depicted in this photograph, reflects the attention to detail and dedication of the association's members in creating a memorable and successful competition.
