The image captures a moment frozen in time, depicting an elderly figure seated with his right arm raised. Created in 1621, this masterpiece was brought to life using red chalk on blue paper, measuring approximately 9 1/4 x 12 11/16 inches (235 x 322 cm). The artist behind this remarkable drawing is Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, also known as Guercino. Hailing from Cento, Italy (1591-1666), Guercino's talent shines through in every stroke of his work. This particular piece serves as a study for a larger composition and portrays an intended discarded lover named Tithonus. Interestingly enough, Tithonus is associated with the goddess Aurora or Dawn. In fact, Guercino painted a ceiling fresco titled "Aurora" at Casino Ludovisi in Rome. It is believed that the seated old man depicted here may have been inspired by this very character.
