Amsterdam - A Ballet in Three Scenes

EDITORS COMMENTS
by George R. Sims and Charles Fletcher, produced at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool on July 12, 1909, was a captivating and innovative dance production of the early 1900s. This photograph, taken during the performance, showcases the elegance and grace of the dancers as they bring to life the scenes of this Dutch-inspired ballet. The collaborative work of Sims and Fletcher, with music by Herman Finck, was described as "new" in The Stage Year Book 1910. Known for his supply of chorus girls, producer John Tiller presented a visually stunning production filled with blue costumes and intricate choreography. The first scene depicts a lively Dutch marketplace, with women in traditional Dutch dresses haggling over goods, while men in clogs and wooden shoes go about their business. The second scene transports the audience to a serene windmill, where a woman in a blue gown dances alone, her movements reflecting the gentle turning of the windmill blades. The final scene showcases a grand procession of women, dressed in blue, carrying lanterns and celebrating the arrival of spring. This photograph captures the essence of the ballet, with its vibrant costumes, expressive dancers, and the enchanting Dutch atmosphere. The Tiller Girls, known for their precision and synchronization, can be seen in the background, adding to the visual spectacle of the production. Amsterdam: A Ballet in Three Scenes was a true representation of the Edwardian era's love for dance, music, and the arts.
