EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the aftermath of a fierce air battle during the historic Battle of Britain in 1940. The wreckage of a German Heinkel He-111H bomber lies scattered on the shores of East Beach at Selsey Bill in Sussex, England, following an attack on Portsmouth Dockyards. The Luftwaffe aircraft, belonging to 2./ Kampfgeschwader 55, had been brought down by the skillful maneuvers of Pilot-Officer Lord Rup Kay-Shuttleworth and Pilot-Officer Ecj Wakeham in their Hawker Hurricane 1S fighter planes from 145 Squadron based at Tangmere. Three of the German crew, Oberlts Schweinhagen, Oberfw E Slotosch, and Fw H Steiner, were wounded and taken prisoner. Tragically, two crew members, Uffz W Muller and Oberfw H Schluter, did not survive the crash and are buried in Saint Andrews Churchyard in Tangmere. The Heinkel He-111, a formidable long-range bomber of the German Air Force (Luftwaffe), was a common sight during the early stages of World War II. This image serves as a poignant reminder of the intense aerial combat that took place during the Battle of Britain, a pivotal moment in the war that ultimately secured the air supremacy for the Royal Air Force and prevented a Nazi invasion of the UK.
