EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, created between 1816 and 1830, showcases two fascinating waterbirds native to the southern hemisphere: the Cape Barren Goose (Cereopsis novaehollandiae) and the Snowy Sheathbill (Chionis albus). The illustration, part of Jean Gabriel Pretre's contributions to the renowned "Dictionnaire de Naturaliste: Omnithologie" by Dumont de Sainte-Croix, was produced under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin and published by F.G. Levrault in Paris, France. Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, meticulously captured the intricate details of these birds, while the skilled engravers Massard and J.G. Pretre brought the illustrations to life through the stipple engraving technique. The result is a stunning representation of the Cape Barren Goose and Snowy Sheathbill, their plumage and features rendered in beautiful detail. The Cape Barren Goose, also known as the Black-necked Swan Goose, is native to Tasmania and some islands off the southeastern coast of Australia. With its distinctive black neck and white body, this goose is well adapted to its coastal habitat. The Snowy Sheathbill, on the other hand, is found in the subantarctic islands of the Southern Ocean. This unique bird, with its white plumage and black bill, is often referred to as the 'clown of the Antarctic' due to its playful behavior. This historical illustration not only showcases the beauty of these two birds but also provides a glimpse into the rich natural history of the southern hemisphere during the early 19th century.
