EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Iris Hoey, a renowned actress of the 1920s, in two of her most intriguing stage performances: "Clothes and the Woman" by George Paston and "Me and My Diary" by Gertrude Jennings. The reverse of this four-page flyer announces Robert Courtneidge's production of these plays, featuring Iris Hoey and her company at Nottingham's Theatre Royal from May 15, 1922. Iris Hoey, born on July 17, 1885, was a popular figure in musical comedies, gracing the stage in productions such as "Princess Caprice," "Oh! Oh! Delphine," and "The Pearl Girl." By this time, however, she had shifted her focus to straight theatre. The charm of this image, taken by Reville Ltd in London, showcases Hoey's captivating presence and elegance. The flyer, printed by David Allen and Son Ltd in Belfast and London, advertises six nights of these charitable performances. "Clothes and the Woman" and "Me and My Diary" were two thought-provoking plays that showcased Hoey's versatility as an actress. The former, by George Paston, explores the intricacies of human relationships and the power of clothing to shape identity. "Me and My Diary," by Gertrude Jennings, is a poignant and comical exploration of the human condition. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the world of popular entertainment during the 1920s. Hoey's performances in these plays marked a departure from her musical comedy roots and showcased her range as an actress. The image, with its timeless charm and intriguing backstory, remains a captivating reminder of a bygone era in the history of the stage.
