Harolds oath of fealty to Duke William of Normandy

Allegedly after being shipwrecked on the French coast in 1064 (a date highly disputed amongst historians), The Bayeux Tapestry, and other Norman sources, record that Harold swore an oath on sacred relics to Duke William of Normandy to support his (William s) claim to the English throne. After the death of King Edward the Confessor, the Normans were quick to point out that in accepting the crown of England, Harold had broken this alleged oath. He makes his pledge in the presence of Bishop Odo, Adeliza, Matilda, Haco and Wolnoth. Date: 1054

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image, Harold Godwinson, the future King of England, is depicted taking an oath of fealty to Duke William of Normandy. The scene, as recorded in the Bayeux Tapestry and other Norman sources, is believed to have taken place around 1054, although the exact date is a subject of historical debate. Harold, holding a Bible in his left hand, swears his allegiance to William in the presence of important Norman figures, including Bishop Odo, Adeliza, Matilda, Haco, and Wolnoth. The sacred relics of saints are displayed in ornate caskets, symbolizing the solemnity of the promise being made. The significance of this moment lies in the fact that, according to Norman accounts, Harold had pledged his loyalty to William, promising to support his claim to the English throne. This allegiance was sealed with a promise concealed within the sacred relics, adding an air of mystery and intrigue to the event. However, the circumstances surrounding Harold's eventual ascension to the English throne, following the death of King Edward the Confessor, would lead to a bitter dispute. The Normans would argue that Harold had broken his oath, and this allegation would fuel the Norman invasion of England in 1066. This powerful image captures the essence of the political intrigue and shifting alliances that characterized the 11th century, as well as the importance of religious symbols and oaths in shaping the course of history. The solemn expressions on the faces of those present underscore the gravity of the moment, as Harold makes his promise to Duke William, unaware of the far-reaching consequences it would have for the future of Britain.
