EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking print depicts Jean Le Maingre, better known as Marshal Jules de Janson de Sailly, or simply Jules de Boucicaut, one of the most renowned military commanders in French history. Born in 1366, Boucicaut rose to prominence under King Charles VI of France and served as Marshal of France from 1392 until his death in 1421. The image captures the Marshal in full armor, his helmet resting atop his head, revealing his stern profile. The intricate details of his armor, with its embossed designs and meticulously crafted plates, are a testament to the artistry and skill of the armorer. The length of his lance, held in his right hand, underscores his status as a formidable warrior. Boucicaut's heroic deeds are a significant part of French military history. He played a pivotal role in several key battles, including the Battle of Nicopolis in 1396, where he was one of the few survivors of the French army. He also played a crucial role in the defense of Paris during the Hundred Years' War, repelling English forces in 1414. Despite his military prowess, Boucicaut was also known for his chivalry and compassion. He was a patron of the arts and a generous benefactor to the Church. The print, created by the renowned French artist Jean-Baptiste Isabey, or Boilly, captures the essence of this complex and heroic figure, whose legacy continues to inspire and captivate historians and artists alike.
